MEXICO CITY — The parents of a 7-year-old boy who died in a car crash say the school district has not offered them any answers about the cause of his death.
The parents, including one of his siblings, said the school did not take them seriously when they started to investigate after their son, Gabriel, was found unresponsive at a house in the state of Oaxaca.
A nurse who had examined him later said the cause was heart failure and that he had been drinking.
A few days after he was found, he was pronounced dead in a hospital.
The mother, who asked not to be identified because she was still trying to process what happened, said her son was so ill that he was given a blood transfusion but that the doctors couldn’t figure out why he was suffering.
She said they went to the hospital’s morgue but were told that their son had died from “a heart attack,” and that his cause of death was “not clear.”
She said she had been hoping for answers for several months, even when they first learned that the district had taken a different approach to the case than most states.
The mother said the family also started to question whether they were being given enough information.
The Oaxacan state government has refused to comment on the case.
The district did not respond to CNN’s requests for comment.
It took more than a year to find out the cause, and the parents were told they would receive a notification after they submitted their report.
But they never received it, the mother said.
The family is now left with nothing but a letter to the district, the father’s medical records and a handwritten note that reads: “We are asking for an explanation for why we are not getting answers.
It has been a year.”
The family has filed a civil lawsuit seeking $7.4 million in damages for the loss of their son and for their medical bills.
They are also asking for the resignation of the district’s chief medical officer, a district attorney and several school administrators.
In a statement to CNN, the Oaxacán government said it would respond to the lawsuit as soon as possible.
The school district did respond to a CNN inquiry but has not provided any details about how the complaint was filed.
The U.S. Department of Education is conducting an investigation into the incident, but did not comment.
