By MALIA OBAMA | 09 November 2016 08:01:06As the former first lady and US senator faces a tough re-election battle, the first female education minister in the United States says she’s “a woman of principle”.
In a wide-ranging interview with The Washington Post, Mrs Clinton’s Education Minister for America, Carmen Ortiz, said she is “excited” to serve the president and hopes to “change the culture of America”.
Mrs Ortiz was one of just five women to serve as the US secretary of education during the Obama administration.
She said she believes that the “American Dream” is being “triggered” by the media and that “there’s no such thing as the American Dream”.
She said that she “never had the chance to be in the public sphere”, and that her father “had to sacrifice a lot to get me to this”.
When asked how she feels about Mrs Clinton having her name attached to her new education agency, Mrs Ortiz said that it was a “personal responsibility”.
“I’m excited because I think we’re going to have a better education system.
I think that’s going to be a big improvement for the children of this country.”
The public education system is failing students,” she added.”
We have students who are being pushed into the lowest level of education in the country.
I don’t think the children deserve that.
“Mrs Ortiz’s appointment comes as Mrs Clinton has been criticised for failing to meet the goals set by the US Department of Education in its first review of the school curriculum, published last month.
Mrs Clinton’s administration has also faced criticism for not providing sufficient funding to schools across the country, with a number of districts reporting that they had been left with $1bn in cuts to their budgets.
She has been forced to defend her record on education in a series of tweets over the past few days.
Her appointment to the Education Department, which was first reported by Politico, comes as the former president faces a difficult re-run election battle with Republican challenger Donald Trump.
In an interview with ABC’s Good Morning America on Sunday, Mr Trump said he would “love to see” Mrs Clinton appoint a woman to her education post, as well as former President Barack Obama, but did not name any of his top contenders.”
I’d love to see somebody.
I’d love for somebody to do a great job.
I would love for them to come in and work on education,” Mr Trump told ABC’s George Stephanopoulos.”
And I think if somebody comes in, I think it would be a great position for her, as far as education, to help with that,” he added.
In a statement on Sunday afternoon, Mrs Trump said that while she did not want to name any candidates, she would consider candidates who would “help me build a better future for the country”.”
As I have said many times, I would like to see a woman of education and I am very encouraged by Carmen Ortiz’s career and leadership in the education field,” she said.”
As a lifelong teacher, I have met her personally, and she has an impressive record of leadership in her field.
“She has an incredible talent for connecting and engaging young people across the nation and is a true champion for public education.”‘
We need more people like her’A number of Democrats have expressed concern about the role Mrs Clinton may play in her administration’s efforts to improve the educational outcomes of children in the US.
One of them, Senator Bernie Sanders, who is running for the Democratic nomination for president, said on Sunday that “we need more women like Carmen Ortiz”.
“She is a very important part of our team,” Mr Sanders told ABC News.
“It is not good enough that women are not doing anything.
We need more of them in positions like Carmen’s.”
Asked whether he thought Mrs Clinton would be an effective education minister, Mr Sanders said: “I think she will be.
I mean, we need more young people like Carmen who are getting a better opportunity.”
But Mrs Clinton, who has faced a number, of criticism from the left over her handling of her family’s charitable foundation and her support of a trade deal with Pacific Rim countries, said the role of the US Education Department would be “very different” from that of the Obama White House.
“For example, there are certain requirements in education that you have to meet before you can work for a federal agency.
But if you are a federal official, there is nothing you can do,” she told ABC.”
There are certain things that you cannot do and the Education Secretary has to meet those requirements.”
But, she added, “it is a role that you are in because you are going to serve your country, not to just be in an office and make speeches”.’
I would rather serve as a secretary than a secretary of state’When asked whether she would be interested in being the US education secretary,
