Educators are advising students and parents to report their problems to school authorities to make sure the school is doing everything it can to help students.
NBC News has learned that this has been done in some cases.
The schools website lists the following as the top three reasons students might be experiencing difficulty:The problem might be due to a problem in the classroom or school environmentThe problem may be due in part to a change in the school environment or in staff and other studentsThe problem can be due the weatherThe problem could be a symptom of illnessThe problem is due to the school calendar changingThe problem has not been fixed in a timely manner, and the school needs to make an effort to do so.
The websites of the New York City schools system say that parents can report any issues to the district by calling 311.
In the meantime, students are encouraged, if they feel uncomfortable, to call the school and report the problem.
The school district has not yet responded to NBC News requests for comment on the issue.
